#3- I’ll Fly Away

One of my favorite church memories involves this song.  I was worship leader at a previous church and early one Sunday morning while the worship team and I were practicing for the service, we began to plan I’ll Fly Away.  I should add that I do this song fast and very joyfully and upbeat.  Anyway, we started the song and in the back of the still mostly empty sanctuary was Bob.  Bob was one of our elders.  An older gentleman who had a pretty laid back and slightly stoic demeanor.  As we began to rock the hymn some movement caught my eye.  As I looked up from my music stand there was Bob doing some sort of a skip hop dance thing across the back of the sanctuary directly in front of us.  He was right in time with the beat and apparently just couldn’t help himself.  If I remember right we were all so caught off guard and laughing so hard that we couldn’t keep singing or playing and the song crashed.  I already loved the song, but I’ll never forget that morning when we thought Bob might actually “fly away!”

Verse 1:
Some glad morning when this life is o'er, I'll fly away;
To a home on God's celestial shore,
I'll fly away.

Chorus:
I'll fly away, oh glory, I'll fly away;
when I die, hallelujah, by and by,
I'll fly away.

Verse 2:
When the shadows of this life have grown, I'll fly away;
Like a bird from prison bars has flown,
I'll fly away.

Chorus

Verse 3:
Just a few more weary days and then, I'll fly away;
to a land where joys shall never end, I'll fly away.

Chorus
